forest deer

Like a Merry-Go-Round in Childhood is based on reinterpreted images of a Soviet film for schoolchildren Oh, That Nastya! (1972). The main conflict of the film is built around the borderline between imaginary and real. A lonely girl lives within circle of her home, school and a Palace of Pioneers. In her fantasies, she meets a forest deer, whom she begs to take her in a 'wonderful deer-land' and a panter. Her stories are marked by classmates and a teacher as 'lie', inappropriate for a 'true Soviet pioneer'. By exploring the gap between the imaginary Soviet and the real post-Soviet, I fill this gap with my own interpretation of what the 'deer land' was and what creatures inhabited it. Half-humans, half-animals, figures exist in the borderline space between reality and the horizon of the memory of several generations, brought up on Soviet visuality and now having the opportunity to examine these paths critically. Like a Merry-Go-Round in Childhood consists of three parts.

Forest Deer part connects the image of a girl on a deer with the landscapes from The Adventures of Mowgli (1967-1971) and the ruins of the INION RAS building, creating a post-apocalyptic landscape in which the remains of a Soviet building fill a mythical jungle inhabited by ghosts of girls, riding deer and animals.
